Great Story for Readers of All Ages!

I just finished reading “The Education of Little Tree” for the second time and I highly recommend it to people of all ages. Its charm lies in its point of view: an Indian boy sharing what he’s learned of the world around him through adventures with his Cherokee grandparents in the Tennessee mountains of Depression era America. We get the child’s impression of local characters, of bloviating politicians, of the illegal whiskey trade and of the casual prejudice of white people (which he often poignantly misinterprets). There are laugh-out-loud scenes, as when two bootleggers from the city undergo a hilarious hazing into the ways of the mountains. There are also tear-inducing scenes, as when Little Tree is taken from his grandparents by the heartless social work bureaucracy.

Through all of Little Tree’s adventures, the reader learns along with him. It’s a fun, touching and memorable journey. “The Education of Little Tree” is a wonderful book to share with friends of all ages. I’ve made a point of giving it to friends who are not big readers because it is so easy to read, and Little Tree’s adventures immediately draw them into the story. It makes reading fun and also conveys many important lessons about people, life and the natural world we inhabit. I love this book, and the movie they made from it is also outstanding.

Worthy of Being Called a Classic

Generally, I find it helpful to know something of an author prior to reading their work. I like to know something about their history and life and see if I can find those threads in what I am reading. Here, though, the author's backstory is puzzling. Carter, whose real name was Asa Earl Carter, was a Ku Klux Klan member and sometime author. His writings are puzzling in light of his beliefs and the way he lived his life.

In this story, Little Tree is a five-year old boy whose parents have just died. He goes to live with his Cherokee grandparents in the hills of Tennessee. His grandparents are the descendants of those who refused to walk the Trail of Tears and instead hid in the mountains and continued their way of life as best they could. The story of Little Tree and his grandfather was so amazing and so beautiful. Because I come from a rural mountain way of life, reading of the closeness of the boy with his grandparents was so tender and touching for me. I cried at several points through the book and sobbed the last few chapters. This is an intergenerational story of heartache, traditions, ways of life and ancient wisdoms--it is a classic in every sense and deserves that rating. Carter tells of Little Tree's education in his native American heritage, in how to live with a mountain, and the important of family. Yet, the book is never one that preaches, just tells a story about a boy and his family that you desperately wished had been true. In short, I loved every word, in spite of the author and his intentions--if he had any.

I suppose, in regards to the author, I prefer to think this work of beauty in some way apologizes for his hatred in life, even if he didn't mean it to be that way. The work is so hauntingly beautiful and paints such a touching tender portrait of a lost way of life. Maybe Carter's soul wasn't all bad, just torn and conflicted--trying to bridge between how he grew up and a larger truth about life. That's what I'm walking away with.

About the Author
Catrien Ross has lived and traveled extensively in Japan for over fifteen years. She operates Energy Medicine Japan, which is located at the foot of Mount Fuji, overlooking Lake Kawaguchi. Catrien's practice incorporates traditional Asian medicinal traditions and her training in ecopsychology and practical metaphysics. She also uses healing art and dance to reconnect mind, body and spirit and facilitates study groups and classes, as well as international workshops.

Japanese Psychic and Paranormal Phenomena

The title for "Japanese Ghost Stories" is somewhat misleading. In fact, this book is a new edition of the previously published Supernatural and Mysterious Japan: Spirits, Hauntings and Paranormal Phenomena. The only thing different is the title and cover.

There aren't a lot of ghost stories in this book. In fact, "Japanese Ghost Stories" is the type of book one might pick up in a New Age bookstore, right next to "Forbidden Secrets of the Pyramids" and "How to See Leprechauns." The author, Catrien Ross, is a self-styled Scottish shamen who runs QRQ in Nishi Hachioji Japan, a "healing center" for "healers, alternative thinkers and futurists."

With that in mind, "Japanese Ghost Stories" is a decent little book on with some good information on psychic phenomena in modern Japan as well as some nice ghost stories and haunted places. The book is heavier on psychics than ghosts, with quite a bit on mystic healing which is Ross's own forte. She goes into detail on psychic photographs, ki energy research and feng shui. As a firm believer, there is no skepticism in any of these stories, and Ross presents every story as if it were accepted fact.

Which is not to say that there are no ghosts to be found here. The "Strange but True" chapter contains some nice weirdness, such as the grave of Jesus Christ in northern Aomori prefecture and the living mummies of Gassan mountain. My personal favorite sections were "Modern Day Hauntings" and "Edo Era Tales." Unfortunately, at only 160 Ross doesn't have enough space to go into any detail, and tends to rapid-fire stories at you in quick succession. One page might have four or five haunted places with just the names and a one-sentence synopsis given.

While I had heard many of the stories before, Ross is well-informed and added some new bits and some new stories, as well as some haunted places to check out. Her take on the famous "Tokaido Yotsuya Kaidan" was very nice, with some history of the tale and how it was adapted by various media.

Overall, not a great book on the Japanese supernatural, but not terrible either. Anyone interested in weird phenomena and strange happiness will enjoy it, but anyone looking for a book on actual Japanese ghost stories will come away disappointed.

Can't judge this book by its title

Before you decide to order this book, you should be aware that it is NOT what the title describes, a collection of Japanese ghost stories. It is rather an examination of Japan’s “supernatural tapestry.” At the end of the book there is an eleven-page collection of nine “Scenes of Ghosts and Demons,” followed by two stories that I assume are very lengthy in their original form, summarized here in sixteen pages.

The title is deceptive.

As the previous review mentioned, there are very few actual stories in this book. Only the last 25 pages (out of 158) resemble what I expected the entire book to be. Huge disappointment.
