David Foster Wallace is one of those either-love-him-or-hate-him kind of writers, but most of the subjects in his collection are--as the title suggests--worthy of contempt. On this audiocassette, DFW, as he's known to his fans, reads a selection of his works from the book of the same name. The fictional "interviews" are brief forays into the minds of men via questions that are signaled with a verbal "Q," but never actually asked. While he reads those pieces in the voices of the interviewees, Wallace reads the rest of the collection--a handful of short stories--with the self-conscious lack of emotion commonly used by poets. Don't look for plot or action here; it's strictly character sketches with a good dose of verbal gymnastics. And don't expect to like most of the characters; it's clear the author doesn't either. Wallace, the young turk author whose ubernovel, Infinite Jest, was way too bulky for audio adaptation, throws himself gamely into the medium now, reading from his short fiction collection. In this audio debut, Wallace delivers his spry, satiric exercises in a sure-voiced, confident baritone. With the skill of a veteran narrator, he adeptly retains footing as he navigates his complex and wordy prose. His literary grab-bag trademarks include off-kilter descriptive passages, ponderous lists and footnotes, and a large portion of the tape is devoted to a one-sided interview with a psychotic sexual stalker. These odd tropes come across with humor, even tenderness, in Wallace's sensitive reading. He conveys the earnestness of a young, hardworking writer, eager to make his eccentric vision accessible through its spoken presentation. Following the success of his massive, much-acclaimed novel, Infinite Jest (LJ 1/96), Wallace returns to fiction with a similarly dense, cerebral, and self-reflexive set of short works. Wallace's characters are psychological grotesques, emotionally detached and sometimes, as with the na?ve young wife in "Adult World," finding an odd freedom in their distance. While the inauthenticity of male/female relations is a recurrent motif, the central theme is the nature of narrative itself, as in "Octet," where the author turns self-reflexiveness on itself, creating something that might be termed meta-meta-fiction. Inaccessible

I can't get enough of DFW non-fiction work. It is fascinating and engrossing - he's able to bring readers in to his curiosities, his ruminations, and inner thoughts and richly detailed experiences - all of it infectious.

His fiction however, obviously written by a brilliant mind, remains difficult to enjoy. It feels like homework. Much of the pieces here use structural devices and feel little more than exercises within them.

The "pop quiz" piece stands out to me as an embodiment of both what I love about DFW and found difficult here - as it starts out as a structural exercise and then the writer over takes the work by admitting he was doing exactly that and was unsure it was working or worth it. I ended up having similar thoughts about some of the other pieces throughout the book.

Mostly good with a few exceptions

"Brief Interviews with Hideous Men" is the sort of collection that comes out only after an author has already achieved a reasonable amount of fame and success. It is a book where an author who has received critical praise for previous works can sell a book primarily on the value of his name, not necessarily on the quality of its contents. This isn't meant to imply this book is of no value or is even a bad book. In this reader's opinion, a good 70% of the stories in this work are worthy of publication. It is the other 30% or so that I question whether or not would be deemed deserving of publication if they didn't have David Foster Wallace's name attributed to them as the author.
The stories dealing with the self-absorption and egocentrism of our current therapy & self-help-filled age are both hilarious and frightening. In "The Depressed Person" a woman gets so wrapped up in her own depression that she actually looks at a friend's bout with cancer as a benefit, assuming that her friend, now free from the burdens of having to work, has little better to do with the last months of her life than listen to the sob stories of the title character. Another story concerns a woman so worried about her own sexual ability that she actually is relieved to find out her husband is a porn addict, thinking it means her own fears of sexual inadequacy are unfounded. Sometimes, though, the jokes die out long before the story ends. Towards the end of the book there is a story about a father filled with resentment towards his son, due to the fact that having the son around caused the father to have to share the attention and affection of his wife. What starts off as a funny tale of selfishness and jealousy soon begins to resemble one of those bad "Saturday Night Live" sketches where the same "funny the first time you heard it" joke gets repeated over and over again ad nauseam. . The title pieces, the "Brief Interviews With Hideous Men", which are interspersed throughout the book, are the collections strongest. They provide an insightful look at misogyny and the distorted logic used by many men to justify their poor treatment and attitude towards women. Two men in these interviews, while acknowledging the rape is always undeserving, still try to argue that is can build character in the victim. One man rationalizes his bizarre and deviant sexual behavior by arguing that he never heavily pressures any woman to participate. One man brags to another how he was able to use a woman's fragile emotional state as a tool in his sexual conquest of her. I have to tip my hat to Wallace, he had me absolutely in stitches with the "Brief Interview" about a young man who goes insane after contemplating the drastic universal implications of his sexual fantasy (a fantasy involving the temporary stoppage of time, a la Samantha from "Bewitched").
As a reader, I can deal with, and even enjoy some of Wallace's eccentricities (his constant, but almost always entertaining footnotes, his concluding one story with a plot outline for the remainder of the story instead of the ending itself). At times, though, you almost want Wallace's IQ to drop a few points, because he can occasionally get too clever for his own good. For the life of me, I couldn't tell you what the stories "Church Not Made with Hands" or "Tri-Stan: I Sold Sissee Nar to Ecko" are supposed to be about. I am willing to accept the possibility these stories were simply over my head, however, Wallace would be wise to realize that the quality of a story does not increase in direct proportion to how few people understand it. There is more than enough good stuff in this book to make it worth recommending, but I wouldn't worry too much about reading it all the way through. The few stories that don't seem promising at the outset don't get any better as they go on.

Not a light, entertaining read for me. 5 stars due to DFW's astoundingly creative style. It is a rare experience to marvel at the situations and characters he creates out of thin air. Bref, it's for those who appreciate massive talent and creativity as things.

About the Author
Patricia Libby is Chair of the Department of Accounting and Associate Professor of Accounting at Ithaca College, where she teaches the undergraduate financial accounting course. She previously taught graduate and undergraduate financial accounting at Eastern Michigan University and the University of Texas. Before entering academe, she was an auditor with Price Waterhouse (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) and a financial administrator at the University of Chicago. She received her B.S. from Pennsylvania State University, her M.B.A. from DePaul University, and her Ph.D. from the University of Michigan; she is also a CPA.
Pat conducts research on using cases in the introductory course and other parts of the accounting curriculum. She has published articles in The Accounting Review, Issues in Accounting Education, and The Michigan CPA. She has also conducted seminars nation-wide on active learning strategies, including cooperative learning methods.

Dan Short is the Dean of the M.J. Neeley School of Business at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX. �Prior to that he was Dean at Richard T. Farmer School of Business at Miami University and Dean of the Business School at Kansas State University. �Before entering adminstration, Dan taught at the University of Texas-Austin and the University of Chicago. �He received his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan. �He has won numerous teaching awards during his career teaching both undergraduate and MBA financial accounting courses.

Robert Libby is the David A. Thomas Professor of Management at the Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University, where he teaches the introductory financial accounting course. He previously taught at the University of Illinois, Pennsylvania State University, University of Texas at Austin, University of Chicago, and University of Michigan. He received his B.S. from Pennsylvania State University and his M.A.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Illinois; he is also a CPA.
Bob is a widely published author specializing in behavioral accounting. He was selected as the AAA Outstanding Educator in 2000. His prior text, Accounting and Human Information Processing (Prentice Hall, 1981), was awarded the AICPA/AAA Notable Contributions to the Accounting Literature Award. He received this award again in 1996 for a paper. He has published numerous articles in the Journal of Accounting Research; Accounting, Organizations, and Society; and other accounting journals. He is past Vice President-Publications of the American Accounting Association and is a member of the American Institute of CPAs and the editorial boards of The Accounting Review; Accounting, Organizations, and Society; Journal of Accounting Literature; and Journal of Behavioral Decision Making.

As good as "financial accounting" is ever gonna get.

This good is very helpful, both graphically and technically. I does a great job of explaining everything in plain english and reenforcing those lesson with real world experience. The one complain i have is that there is no answer key so that I can verify my answer (after all, one slip up can effect every following financial document).

HEY LIBBY, LIBBY, AND SHORT! If you can hear me, quit trying to "force the readers to learn." If they want to cheat and not understand the material, then let them get fired from their jobs in five years for not knowing how to do their jobs. The rest of us hard working students are left scratching our heads, wondering if the work we did was correct. INCLUDE AN ANSWER KEY.

Lucid, intersting and easy to follow

I am an engineer running a small company. Last year I bought an accounting package to keep better track of my business. Though the software is great the accompaning manuals are of no use and their concise introduction to accounting did make matters worse.
I have been looking at several accounting manuals but could not find one I could just sit down with and read on my own.
Well now I have found it. This manual is easy to read, clear and to the point and the real company examples make it interesting. After reading only two chapter I realized that the information that came with the accounting software put me totally on the wrong track.
I can recommend this book, manual very highly.

About the Author
Amy Werbel currently serves as an Associate Professor of the History of Art at the State University of New York - Fashion Institute of Technology. From 1994 to 2013, she was Professor of Art History and American Studies at Saint Michael’s College. Professor Werbel is the the author of numerous works on the subject of American visual culture, sexuality, and censorship including: Thomas Eakins: Art, Medicine, and Sexuality in Nineteenth-Century Philadelphia (Yale University Press, 2007). Professor Werbel is a graduate of Harvard and Radcliffe Colleges (A.B. ’86) and Yale University (PhD ’96), and the recipient of fellowships and grants from numerous institutions, including the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, and Metropolitan Museum of Art. She served as a Fulbright Scholar for 2011-2012 at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies in Guangzhou, China. She is the mother of two sons, ages 19 and 15, and lives in Brooklyn with her husband and fellow writer, Frederick Lane.

Captures the hearts & minds of today's Chinese students

As a teacher in Chinese Universities since 2008, I found Ms. Werbel's observations equally grounded in her student's own words and her own incisive observations. This book is a part of an emerging China literature that is a bit more mature than the initial exotic, instant and superficial experts of earlier years. She dives into her students' thoughtful essays - many in a kind of Chinglish - and yet more than understandable and selects thoughtful morsels for her readers to taste, digest, and savor. In this way, I consider her a bridge builder - one who will help two of the world's civilization understand each other better.

Ms. Werbel's passion for teaching is stunning and her love of seeing her students's eyes light up is palpable in her writing. If you ever thought of a year in China teaching in a University, "Lessons from China" is your primer on how to do it!

She is an adventurer & her detailed descriptions of several side trips and local immersion are delightful. Buy this book - recommend it to others!

Thinking across borders

"Lessons from China" is an engaging, thoughtful, and stimulating account of Amy Werbel's year as a Fulbright Scholar teaching at the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, in Guangzou China. In 2011-2012 the author taught courses on "Culture in the United States from the Civil War to World War I" and "America in the 1960s" to graduate students at GDUFS; traveled throughout China as a guest lecturer; mentored and befriended several graduate students; learned the ins and outs of negotiating ethnic and linguistic divisions and barriers within China; and absorbed much else about contemporary China's cultural, intellectual, and political environment that she reports in her book.
American readers will find much here to engage their minds, both in Werbel's account of her teaching and in her accounts--supported with long unedited quotations from student homework and examination papers--of Chinese students' reception and perception of American history and culture. Werbel and her students discussed topics such as race relations, the counterculture of the 1960s, censorship, the dynamics of reform, and the Vietnam War. She introduced them to the practice and skills of dialogue, critical thinking, and the use of primary sources, which in turn raises important questions about the nature and future of higher education in both China and America.
Reading this account of a year of teaching and learning leaves an American reader with a lot to ponder: our understanding and assessment of our own history and institutions, how others perceive them, and the role of the liberal arts and critical thinking in our own system of higher education.

The Real China Lessons

Excellent read and insight into today's China. Having lived half my time in Shenzhen, China (City next to Guangzhou) over the last 12 years, I could relate and found her book thoroughly enjoyable. I truely appreciated Amy Werbel's warmth, compassion, and humorous portraits of her experiences teaching in China. Her insight into the goals, ambitions, and fears of her students are real. The pressure on the students from peers, schools, and parents to succeed are fact. Her personal trials and tribulations adapting to Chinese culture are similar to others connecting with the 'China experience'. This is a 'must read' for those interested in China and the Chinese.
Amazing how fast China is growing. For example, in the few years gone by since she taught in Guangzhou, the 'one child' policy is giving way to 'two children' with Xi Jiping's government policies. The generation that Professor Werbel taught will soon become the new China. I like what I read. I like what Professor Werbel added to the lives of her students. I have hope for China's future. You, your children, your parents, and your husband have given wonderful insight to Chinese students into the real America and Americans---who could ask for more to communicate the human experiences between people of different cultures. Yeah Amy!

I learned a lot from this book. India is an amalgam of nations inside one country. It is difficult to generalize about investing in India but there are a few themes to follow.

Most companies in India have a dominant shareholder, or family of shareholders. As such, though there are some companies like this in the US, the first prism you view any Indian company through is how they treat outside passive minority shareholders, particularly foreign ones. If they constantly give minority shareholders the short end of the stick, no matter how attractive the investment, avoid them.

Analysis of corporate governance is paramount, because it is very difficult to take a company over in a hostile manner. Assume that the present management will never be changed. Does the company still look cheap if the value -destroying management team will remain there?

Analyze capital allocation as well. If management acts like value maximizing businessmen, it could be a good company to invest in. If not, avoid.

Structure of the Book

The book is a slow ramp up as far as business goes, talking about culture, politics, economy, and financial structure, before really digging into investing. These are good things to learn about, but the amount of time the book dedicates to making practical investment decisions in India is maybe 25% of the book.

The Main Problem

After you read this book, you will realize that without detailed local knowledge, you don't stand a chance of investing in public Indian companies directly. As such, the book is of limited value to most people. So, though it is a good book, you probably would not benefit from reading it, aside from learning about Indian culture and government. You would have to build up a lot of knowledge about the Indian families who run public corporations in India -- which ones are favorable to outside passive minority investors, and which are not.

Aside from that, they mention the website for the book, but it is just a collection of documents for the companies mentioned in the book.

Summary

India is an unusual country with many challenges. You will learn a lot about it and its economy reading this book. When you are done reading this book, you will likely conclude that investing in Indian companies is best left to local experts like the author. The book gives a good framework, but one embarking upon investing in India will need to develop knowledge of which Indian families treat minority shareholders fairly and who do not.

India is a very diverse country that is neither bounded by religion nor language. From understanding the logic of the Indian consumer to those of corporate houses, India has never been an easy country to comprehend. The road to investing in India has never been a straight jacketed one and many MNC’s who failed to gasp this fact have incurred heavy losses.

Investing in India requires a deeper understanding of the beliefs and value system India encapsulates. One needs to understand India’s history, how the government operates, what has been the political landscape etc. Rahul Saraogi has written a wonderful book that exactly captures this spirit. The book is not about how to find a stock in India or how to value one; it is about how India and Indians have been. The author wonderfully captures how the government, media and politics function, how the Indian economy has been and how its various facets agricultural, services and manufacturing have evolved, how different states are shaping up, India’s financial architecture and specifically the banking system and equity markets. The author also devotes a chapter to value investing in India and gives good space to all important aspects such as corporate governance, financial strength, business fundamentals and capital allocation. Throughout the book there are quite relevant real life examples and the author fearlessly states his views on different companies and is not biased.

India is a on the cusp of a major positive breakout owing to many factors, but most important a stable and pro-growth government. Market pundits have been saying India is on its way to a major bull market and this could be a wonderful opportunity to invest in high quality businesses. A serious and long term investor (retail or an institutional) would do himself a favour by reading this book.

This pithy, 150 page, brilliantly edited introduction to value investing in the Indian markets has hardly a wasted word in it. Dense in information but clearly written, if you want to learn about this subject, this is your book. No hot tips here, just a solid background.

great for me, maybe not for you.

I enjoyed finding this book, and am proud to include it with my collection of reference material. I restore Steinway grands professionally, so this book is very useful to me. It contains many hard to find facts and old production specs that have been debated for years. If you are a piano technician, you need this book. Buy it. If you are a pianist looking for a buyer's guide or interesting history book, do not waste your money. This book has no entertainment value at all. It does not translate well to layman's terms, and has no stories to tell. Allatoona Piano restoration.
