Captures multiple topics, but shallowly

The book offers a pretty high level overview of NoSQL solutions and tools. It touches each solution briefly, at the level typically easily found on the Internet. Having a "one stop shop" as a summary for the various solutions is nice and handy for a sequential read, but the book fails to offer any meaningful insight beyond the summary.

Pretty Bad Title and Book

THE NoSQL book has arrived! (Even though Hadoop's most popular query language (HIVE) is based on SQL (MySQL)). Whatever... This book is not really valuable to an architect, CTO or anybody else who's serious about dumping the good old RDMS. It jumps around different no-Oracle-DB2-SQLServer-MySQL-PostgreSQL technologies and really doesn't get beyond the online tutorial you could find on yes-MonoDB-CouchDB-SimpleDB-Casandra-Hive-HBase-Hypertable-Redis web sites. YOU, as a potential reader of this book, are really interested in understanding if adopting these emerging data persistence technologies are worth risking your career. This book will, unfortunately, not answer that question.

Good book - lives up to its clearly defined scoped

The author clearly states this: "If you are unsure where to start with NoSQL and how to learn to manage and analyze big data, then you will find this book to be a good introduction and a useful reference to the topic... Anyone starting out with big data analysis and NoSQL will gain from reading this book.". The author makes NO claim about making you a HBase or Hive or MongoDB expert. So I find the reviews about this book being shallow etc a bit amusing. The book also gives pointers to the download locations and makes a good attempt to make the reading exercise hands-on, rather than drone on about the technologies. The book could have priced in the 20's for wider reach among students - but this is a good resource for your NoSQL library.

Handbook of the Sociology of Emotions Volume II presents all new chapters in the ever developing area of the sociology of emotions. The volume is divided into two sections: Theoretical Perspectives and Social Arenas of Emotions. It reviews major sociological theories on emotions, which include evolutionary theory, identity theory, affect control theory, social exchange theory, ritual theory, and cultural theory among others. Social arenas where emotions are examined include, but are not limited to, the economy and the workplace, the family, mental health, crime, sports, technology, social movements, and the field of science. All the chapters review the major theories and research in the area, and each chapter ends with some discussion of directions for future research.

The Sociology of Emotions is a fast growing and vital field in the broad discipline of Sociology. This volume II follows the Handbook of the Sociology of Emotions which was first published in 2006. About the Author

Jan E. Stets is professor of Sociology and Co-Director of the Social Psychology Research Laboratory at the University of California, Riverside. She received her PhD in sociology from Indiana University in 1987. She was assistant and associate professor at Washington State University. In 2002, she moved to the University of California, Riverside as full professor. She is past Director of the Sociology Program at the National Science Foundation, a recipient of NSF grants, a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a Fellow of the Society for Experimental Social Psychology, and a member of the Sociological Research Association. She is past chair of the ASA Section on Emotions and the ASA Section on Social Psychology. She is co-editing Social Psychology Quarterly. She specializes in the areas of self and identity, emotions, and morality. She is an author of several books and many research articles.

Jonathan H. Turner is a professor of sociology at University of California, Riverside. After receiving his PhD from Cornell University in 1968, since the academic year 1969-1970 he has been at UCR. He has been Faculty Research Lecturer at UCR and in the profession, he has been president of the Pacific Sociological Association and California Sociological Association. He is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and a member of the Sociological Research Association. He has lectured widely all over the world and he has been a visiting professor at Cambridge University, UK, Universitat Bremen, Germany, Universitat Bielefeld, German, Shandong University and Nan Kai University, Peoples Republic at China. He is known as a general theorist of sociology, although he has a number of specialties: the sociology of emotions, ethnic relations, social institutions, social stratification and bio-sociology. He is an author of many books, including textbooks and articles.

Public speaking made easy.

For most people, public speaking isn't something that comes easy. In fact, most people dislike giving speeches (putting it mildly). I was one of those people that didn't come easy for. But, after careful studying of the tips/techniques to give a good speech, ways to analyze your audience, and many other concepts, I was able to give successful speeches, with the confidence that being well prepared provides. The topics in this book are easy to understand and remember, explain nearly all of the issues important for a successful speech, and are arranged in a manner that allows the student to get more sophisticated as he/she progresses through the course without presenting an information overload in the beginning and without holding all of the useful information until the end. I think that this book is a valuable text not only for the student but for anyone that would like to improve their public speaking skills.

Not the best...

I have used in the past (and currently using) this publication for my Presentational Speaking for Engineering students and it's the only public speaking book that we have seemed to use in our Communication Studies Dept for this particular course. I am not sure why there is WAY too much "rhetoric" involved in this book. This book could use some tips for ESL students and could be geared a bit less towards rhetoric students and more towards a practical emphasis on presentational speaking. Especially when it comes to professional conferences and verbals on qualifying exams. Out of all the other public speaking texts, I find this one to be non-accessible, and out-of-touch with non-rhetoric students. But...it gets the job "done."

Michael Reaves received an Emmy Award for his work on the Batman animated television series. A Star Wars MASH Unit

"Battle Surgeons" is the first book in the Medstar duology. The action takes place two years after "Attack of the Clones." As can be guessed from the title of both the book and the duology, "Battle Surgeons" gives readers the first true look at a side of the Galaxy that has never been seen before. These battle surgeons are the ones who clean up the messes of all the wars and battles and try to save lives in the midst of a war. Think of it as the Star Wars version of M.A.S.H. and you will have a sense of exactly what "Battle Surgeons" is.

This story takes place on, and around, the planet Drongar. There is some backstory presented that there is a rare plant which can be used as something of a miracle drug for a variety of species throughout the galaxy and the Clone Wars have come to Drongar for the control of this plant/drug. This is the background, but it isn't terribly important because the story is really about the M.A.S.H. unit. The heart of "Battle Surgeons" lies in the interaction between the various surgeons: Jos Vondar, Zan Yant, Tolk le Trene, and the Jedi Padawan Barriss Offee sent to investigate the situation on Drongar. There is, of course, the love interest between Jos and Tolk, which is complicated by their cultural restrictions. But, added to the mix is also the protocol droid I-Five. Readers may remember I-Five from "Darth Maul: Shadow Hunter", which was also written by Michael Reaves. I-Five is a droid which has more human emotional characteristics than most droids, more so than some humans would think possible for a droid. He is also a much more interesting character (on the page) than C-3PO (not in this book). For example, we see I-Five gambling with the other surgeons, holding his own in both the game as well as in the give and take of conversation.

There is a main plot thread about smuggling the rare plant from Drongar, but what makes this story shine is the interactions within the M.A.S.H. unit (if I were more familiar with the show I would be able to extend the analogy to the characters). This is a much funnier book than many of the other Star Wars novels, and while they all use humor, the humor in "Battle Surgeons" felt appropriate and fitting for who the characters are and the situation they are dealing with. Then again, I was prepped for this novel by periodically watching M.A.S.H. reruns over the years. "Battle Surgeons" is an entertaining look into an overlooked part of the Star Wars universe, and one which also sets up the continuing story in "Medstar II: Healer". This volume was good enough that I am looking to read the second volume over many of the other Star Wars novels that have been published.

Todd Palamar began his career creating traditional special effects for low-budget horror movies and quickly gravitated to computer animation, first working on numerous straight-to-video movies and then switching to the video game industry. He has written several Maya books, including Maya Studio Projects: Photorealistic Characters and Maya Studio Projects: Dynamics.

With time and space this book is amazing!

The only problem with this book is finding the space and time to absorb the information.
I thoroughly enjoyed "Introducing Autodesk Maya 2013" by Dariush Derakhshani, which took me 6 months to complete. I took notes each day and made screen shots of everything I created to document the progress while working through the book. This book is the next level up for learning Maya. It is also 600 pages and the material contained is essential to unraveling the creative workflows and production processes. This book is a prerequisite for working at production studios. I talked to one company and they basically said all their interns were already "Masters" and had worked through the book. There is no secret where the information comes from. You can learn it like everyone else if you want to with this book. The Autodesk University in Las Vegas is another place to get involved.

This book explains in great detail all main concepts of Maya2013. If you want to learn this soft , don't even think about it - just buy it !!!!

The Mastering Autodesk Series is really good, and this edition addresses a lot of new stuff that comes with Maya 2013. If you have mastering Maya 2012, I don't think it is necessary, but it was a big improvement from Mastering Maya 2010.
