A sweet romance that explores a difficult topic.

In 1998, I read Bruce Bawer's book, A Place at the Table. In it, he postulates a simple idea: being LGBT doesn't mean, or require, being a part of a perceived subculture that emphasized (at the time) promiscuity and a rejection of Christianity and its values. He proposed that being "gay" was not immoral, even for Christian believers.

His postulate is now the way many people do think of LGBT : people who want committed relationships, a meaningful relationship with God, marriage, and family. LGBT people are fundamentally people who want mainly what "straight" people want.

But - especially in the Bible belt of rural America - bigotry based on fundamentalist biblical interpretation is not a hypothetical problem for either LGBT kids or their parents. For those that are LGBT, there is tension between city and country, fundamentalist and main-stream theology, public life and home life.

This isn't written as literary fiction. It's a romance. However, this book explores heavier themes of Lesbianism and faith with skill and compassion.

Your Next Favorite YA Romance

This book is one of the dreamiest, most romantic YAs I've read in a long while. Anna and the French Kiss level of romantic. Jo is an unforgettable character who knows exactly who she is, even while wearing an awful bridesmaid dress at her preacher dad's latest wedding. She sacrifices that certainty for her father, family, and faith, all while falling in love with the magnetic girl-next-door. It's sweet, hot, sexy, and so funny. And it all wraps up with the most romantic movie HEA squee of YES. I loved it.

Like Jaye Robin Brown's first book NO PLACE TO FALL, this new story is oozing with southern charm. The romance is sweet and spicy and so are the characters. I love how authentic the voices sound, as well as a premise that explores the struggle of an already out gay character feeling pressured by her radio-minister father to hide her sexual orientation, just before she meets the girl of her dreams. Jo is a whip-smart main character, who values friendship, faith, family, and falling in love. You'll be rooting for her to attain all of the above, plus her own radio show.

a good introduction to the nature of speech

A great deal of well-organized, well-presented information regarding the nature of speech, including many spectrograms with formant tracks. The review of speech perception theory is also well done. The technology is treated in only the final chapter, and definitely qualifies as an overview. The only glaring omission is no description whatsoever of the human auditory mechanism. Nevertheless, the book suited my purposes well.

Excellent introduction to Speech Communication

This is a fine book for approaching the field of speech communication. It includes lucid presentations of key concepts such as phoneme, phone, allophone, units, formants and the Bernoulli's effect. Every chapter closes with a summary, a great tool for reinforcing what you have learned through the chapters. Chapters 1-10 are introductory material, and following chapters discuss more advanced topics, such as models of perception. Application developers will also benefit from a summary of potential acoustic cues from articulatory features (p. 152). Finally, the appendices constitute great teaching and researching resources.

If you are completely new to he field, I would suggest to read first "The Speech Chain" by Denes & Pinson, then Chapters 1-10 of this book. Later on, you may follow with "Acoustic Phonetics" by Stevens, "Acoustic Theory of Speech Production" by Fant, "Speech Processing" by Deng and O'Shaugnessy, and "Spoken Language Processing" by Huang et al.

The Unknown Dubois

W.E.B Dubois is most famous for being one of the founders of the N.A.A.C.P and for his critique of Booker T. Washington's Atlanta Compromise speech in his now famous The Souls of Black Folk which is required reading at most Black Studies Departments at universities throughout the United States in fact a typical United States History program may have you read it as well;however, DuBois book the Negro for which this review is about seems to be less popular and I find that many people have not read it and the historians who mention it rarely talk about it in detail, essentially the book gives a history of African people in Africa,America,and the Caribbean and talks about their accomplishments and struggles from ancient(5000B.C) to modern times(1915). After reading this book I now know why many programs rarely use this book I can't help but believe it is because the book is very Afrocentric in its structure.....I was shocked to find out that when it came to the history of ancient Africa Dubois has more in common with the afrocentrist Molefi Asante than many may realize and less in common with the more popular scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr.(regardless of whether he is a part of the W.E.B Dubois Department at Harvard) I saw Henry Louis Gates PBS documentary Wonders of the African World maybe about five years ago and I remember how skeptical he was about connecting Ancient Egypt to the rest of sub-saharan Africa......DuBois is not shy at all when he states that Egypt is indeed a part of Africa and that the people who founded Egypt were Negro(this was the word used at the time the book was written)Dubois was more radical than people realize he was one of the founders of Pan-African Congress I believe there were five in all, he would eventually leave the N.A.A.C.P abandon the idea of integration, become a socialist(The F.B.I had a file on him), move back to Africa and die in Ghana.....in fact Dubois would have more in common with his enemy Marcus Garvey(Dubois in his early career would criticize Garvey for his back to Africa movement)than he would realize. Its a great read for anyone interested in this African-American intellectual giant it may change your perspective on the man you think you know, but it should make you find him even more interesting. I will warn you that the book is dated it was written in 1915 so some of his theories are proven wrong, one example would be that Dubois at the time thought that man originated in the Middle East, thanks to the archaeological and DNA record we now know that man originated in Africa, but enjoy this book and may it increase our understanding of this great man

Often hard to read

This is often hard to read, not only because it's old and written in a rather long, drawn out style that was once used, but because of the content. I'm sure when it was written, this was seen as "pro-negro", but reading it from a modern perspective sometimes makes you cringe in areas. That said, however, I think it's important to see and understand history as it is, and this is part of that, so it has been interesting, though sometimes it gets a bit dull or uncomfortable for me.

A must read, even if you have to read it again and again

This book took me on a deep journey. Granted it may take most more than giving it a once over, but if you spend the time and effort to really get to know the book, and research exactly what the author is saying it is well worth the time that you took to understand it. A great read, and will challenge even the most agile mind.

İf you're ready to advance...buy this! Not for Beginners!

This book explains very clearly with numerous examples a number of grammar points that have been either 1. problematic for me or that 2. İ had wondered about but hadn't figured out yet what question to ask.
1. There is a whole section on complex sentences in Turkish that use the ~DIK {past or present tenses} or ~(y)AcAK {future tense} suffixes in their construction. There are examples which show how the suffixes attached after the ~DIK or ~(y)AcAK suffixes change for the first, second and third person singular and plural.
2. There is a section that deals with which set of verb-ending suffixes are used with which verb tense and this area also reveals which verb tenses use just mI as the interrogative particle after the infinitive + tense signifier + verb-ending suffix and which use mI + (y)verb ending after the infinitive + tense signifier. This area is very eloquently explained via a simple chart; probably one that is used in Turkey with students in the school system there when they study Turkish (Ummm...you know like we study English in school in English speaking countries.).
Warning: Not every example sentence or phrase in the book is translated into English. Many examples are translated while a number are not. İt is left up to the reader to access a good dictionary and to translate them him/herself. For the beginner this would be frustrating, but for someone who is intermediate (or more advanced) and has a larger Turkish vocabulary than a beginner this would not be frustrating and it actually forces one to actively learn rather than passively being spoon-fed the translation everytime.

Avoid the ebook edition

I have read the preview on my kindle paperwhite. The ebook edition is terrible to unusable. It looks like nobody put any work into editing it for the digital world. Within the text the turkish letters ş and ğ do not get displayed correctly and the qualıty of tables is so awful that even when zoomed ın they are not readable. Also, as lots of things are included as graphics rather than normal text, you can have up to three different letter sizes on one page.

The content quality might be great but the ebook edition is unacceptable.

Recommended for self-learners of Turkish language

There are not so many materials that can be found on self-learning of Turkish language, unlike French or German. This book gives a lot of examples and exercises. I believe after completing doing exercising in this book, you will have a strong grasp of basic Turkish grammar and from thereon you can expand your practical knowledge of Turkish language. I am still using it and have completed several chapters of this book. I must say I am enjoying doing the exercises. It also enclose appendices of Turkish grammar peculiarity at the end of the book. It also provided answer key to the exercises at the end.

I must say that this book will be enjoyed for those who believe that grammar is essential for language learning. But it does not include any audio material or fun games. As I belong to the old school of thought, this is not a problem for me. It definitely can be a good reference book in a classroom. You can use this book together with other Turkish language learning materials for the maximum impact.

About the Author
Jim Kukunas began programming at a young age, teaching himself C and x86 assembly. He is an alumnus of Allegheny College with a degree in Computer Science. Today, he is a software engineer in Intel's Open Source Technology Center. As a performance optimization engineer on the core Linux kernel team, much of his work focuses on kernel space and user space performance optimizations. His efforts have enhanced many projects including the Linux kernel, Zlib, the Englightenment Foundation Libraries, Meego, Android, and many others.

Excellent book! It bridges the gap between the CPU registers and the programmer's head. Chapter 5 is where real action begins. Very clear explanations and hands-on practical examples. It's going to be a classic!
