With Commodore Perry to Japan offers a personal account of Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry’s expedition to Japan through the eyes of a sixteen-year-old purser’s clerk of the USS Mississippi. The documentary edition, endorsed by the National Historic Publications & Records Commission, provides excellent coverage of both the political mission of the Perry expedition, the opening of relations with Japan, and of the social history of a naval warship as well. Also included are fifty-five illustrations ranging from hand drawn, pen-and-ink scenes of everyday life sketched by Speiden and other members of the crew to exquisitely detailed pith paintings by Chinese artists.

Having been a career Marine Corps officer, I would describe this book as being in the style of a logbook, e.g., officer of the day's log where everything of note occurring on a watch is entered, to be read later by the commanding officer or some other senior person. What I found fascinating was the author's powers of observation especially on some historic occasions, e.g., entering Yokohama for the first time, meeting the Japanese dignitaries for the first time, experiencing deaths aboard the ships, and firing salutes to visiting dignitaries (so many that I wondered where they kept the huge quantity of powder necessary to fire the myriad salutes.This book provides a rare insight into life aboard ship in the mid-1800's as well as the momentous opening of Japan (by force and intimidation I might add - sort of a velvet-covered hammer) to the outside world. This is a must-read for all Nipponphiles and readers interested in how our relationship with Japan began.

Amazing insight in our American History.

I was not aware of the event prior to reading the book and was taken by the ability of William Speiden, Jr. (18 years old) recording of history. The book covers more that the event and reveals much about the life of a person in the Navy during that time.

A little dry, but vastly interesting

This book takes the view of William Speiden Jr., a member of Perry's tour to Japan. The book is really interesting and gives a great perspective about the role of the Navy in the 19th Century. Also, some of the sketches done by Speiden and his friends are very impressive. All in all, this book is good, but a little dry.
