The Red Carnation

A difficult book to rate. For those interested in the post-World War II politics of Italy, especially the inner workings of that country's communist party, it will be essential. For most Americans of the present day, much of the book will be a tough slog through a blizzard of political acronyms and drifts of obscure comrades.
However, this political biography comes to life when Ms. Rossanda talks of her youth, her travels (e.g., Cuba and Eastern Europe), her disappointment in the ever faltering USSR, the students of 1968, and the reasons why she devoted her life to the workers' cause.
Two asides: (1) I think BRILL nicely designed the book's jacket. (2) Will I be the only one who thinks back to Gilda Radner's Roseanne Roseannadanna after seeing the name of this very serious author?
