About the Author
Sylvia Plath was born in 1932 in Massachusetts. She began publishing poems and stories at a young age and by the time she entered Smith College had won several poetry prizes. She was a Fulbright Scholar in Cambridge, England, and married British poet Ted Hughes in London in 1956. The young couple moved to the States, where Plath became an instructor at Smith College. Later, they moved back to England, where Plath continued writing poetry and wrote her novel, The Bell Jar, which was first published under the pseudonym Victoria Lucas in England in 1963. On February 11, 1963, Plath committed suicide. Her Collected Poems, published posthumously in 1981, won the Pulitzer Prize.

Strong Impressions of Sylvia Plath Journals

I was extremely surprised with the depth of her consideration of the issues which she felt confronted her on a day-to-day basis for a young person of 18/19 years. She displayed in her journals a very volatile temperament in her mood swings -very conscious on occasions of her attributes (physical) and abilities (cerebral) and then again morosely cognisant of what she saw as her limitations (being a woman; having no wealth to support her etc.).
I haven't yet finished the Journals, but I'm very struck by the many references to suicide in her very early years.
She had a very considerable intellect which in the long run was undermined by the unequal conflict in her mind between the genuine appreciation of her own ability and, unfortunately, the greater doubt about her own worth.

Hits you write in the feels.

Not only do I love Sylvia Plath, but I love that's I got such a bargain on this book! For a penny I got to read all the magnificent things this sad beautiful soul experienced in her day to day life. The only thing I regret is not buying books off of amazon.

I loved this book

This book gave me a better understanding of her illness, work, and life. I can relate very well to her manic depression or as it is known today as bipolar disorder. I love her poetry and her novel The Bell Jar.
