It could have been better!

I have to say it was worth buying for the price but I was disappointed with the book overall. There were no photographs of Natalie Clifford Barney or that life in Paris, France as an expatriate. Miss Barney had a led a more colorful life than the subject of the book itself. There are lots of writing in it but it lacks depth and emotion to me. I have to say I was disappointed because Natalie was such a colorful person who loved life in general. Her writings don't live up to it's expectation but is worth the purchase.

This work is not a biography, and it is not intended to be such. There are other far more extensive works that tackle that form. This work as edited by Anna Livia offers us Natalie's first-hand accounts in her own voice. It also includes substantial excerpts of her writings and thoughts. Anna Livia, and all that helped her, should be lauded in bringing us her works as edited and translated from French. As most of Natalie's works are in French it is a singular pleasure and joy to be able to 'hear' Natalie's words for ourselves.
This books would best be bought as a companion and supplement to Natalie's biography as written by Suzanne Rodriguez. Taken as itself, one may feel it is lacking somehow, but it wasn't written to be an all-inclusive work about the woman in question. For anyone fascinated by Natalie it is a must have on your bookshelf. Enjoy!
