Lewis and Leon postulate that the Soviet Union developed a supersoldier before it imploded—just one, which was abetted with special forces individually encased in “rocket-tanks”; the “tankmen,” it’s hinted, were biotechnologically enhanced, too. The supersoldier disappeared, but five former tankmen remain. Kris Kalenov, now one of Moscow’s finest, gets specially assigned by the mayor when a little girl with a transplanted liver is kidnapped. The organ confers some supercapabilities on the child, including being able, when grown, to bear a supersoldier, thereby launching a new race. Kris contacts fellow ex-tankmen Drost, an army “rapid reaction corps” commander; disarmingly gorgeous bodyguard Nina; and Nikki, a gangster, and the game’s afoot. Played out in the context of “Mafiya” gang warfare and ex–secret police faction-fighting, it’s graveyard-humorous, lethally tough, and curiously sluggish; its best sequence is an interlude in which Kris takes Nikki along for a day of ordinary police work just for, uh, laughs. Absoluteley astounding piece of work

Buy this book now! Seriously. This is one of the greatest stories that I have ever read. In any genre. In any medium. And I have read thousands. This is simply amazing. Seriously I don't even know where to begin. I guess to oversimplify it I would call it a Russian version of Watchmen. Every line drips with poetry. Every page has striking imagery. Every character is a real person, complex and layered just like the story. These are master storytellers going at full throttle and without compromise. Be warned, this is not for little kids. It is dark, complex, filled with social commentary, black humor, lots of sex and violence, and not for one instant does any of it feel forced or done for shock value.These creators are trying to give you a glimpse of a modern Russia where gangsters, politicians, cops, intelligence officers, soldiers, mercenaries, and businessmen are all but indistinguishable from each other in there never ending cutthroat battles and manipulations for power. Strategies. Alliances. Betrayals. Conspiracies within conspiracies are the norm here. And caught in the middle is Kris. A former soldier who starts off trying to solve a kidnapping case and quickly gets sucked into much larger schemes that include everything from new Russian Mafya to secret government super soldier programs. The paranoia never stops and the killing never slows. This is a dark and dangerous world they have created and the truly disturbing part is how much like our own it resembles. It is a masterpiece.

More than a comic book

I have never had any particular interest in the comic book as an art form, but this completely changed my perspective. On a recommendation I acquired the soft bound compilation of the whole series. Read as a whole it is an absorbing story. I was astounded by Lewis's ability to convey a rich and nuanced narrative in so few words. You owe it to yourself to experience this gritty post-Soviet haiku.

As someone without a lot of experience with graphic novels I have to say The Winter Men is proof that I've been missing out. The writing is action packed, funny and above all else smart. The art really brings the reader to a whole new level of interaction with the plot. I was blown away and will be looking for more from this genre. Keep em coming.

In this companion volume to the two-part NOVA television special by the same title, astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and astronomy writer Donald Goldsmith attempt to cram 14 billion years of history into 300 pages. The result of this audacious exercise is a surprising and engrossing book, one that far surpasses the droning tone of so many astronomy texts. Starting (of course) with the Big Bang and ending with the search for extraterrestrial life, the authors synthesize the results of several scientific fields to present a sort of cosmological consilience. They also emphasize the scientific method and its inherent skepticism as the only way to understand such mysteries as dark matter, stellar formation, and the origin of life on Earth. Although several books are published each year that provide overviews of various branches of science, what's different about this one is the accessible tone of the writing. The authors use mild humor throughout to keep readers going in difficult sections; for instance, when assessing the question of why we live during the rare time when the amounts of dark and not-dark energy are roughly equal in the universe, they relate that cosmologist Michael Turner calls the situation the "'Nancy Kerrigan problem,' in honor of the Olympic figure skater, who asked... 'Why me? Why now?'" This is the most informative, congenial and accessible general look at cosmology to come along since Carl Sagan's Cosmos 27 years ago—and, like Cosmos, it's a companion to a PBS series, in this case a Nova special (to air on September 28 and 29). But Tyson (The Sky Is Not the Limit, etc.), who's director of Manhattan's Hayden Planetarium, and Goldsmith (Connecting with the Cosmos, etc.) are no Sagan clones; they bring a distinct point of view and tone to this title. The point of view surfaces right away, both with their concerted effort to draw in numerous branches of science to explain the story of cosmic evolution, and with the statement that "science depends on organized skepticism." The authors continually refer to the reach and limits of science, explaining, as they offer a chronological tour of cosmic history, just what they think science can tell us and what it can't (as they end the journey, focusing on the possibility of extraterrestrial life, they deliver several sharp blows to true believers of UFOs). The tone is informational, aimed at high clarity, and laced with giddy humor: "A hundred billion years from now... all but the closest galaxies will have vanished over our horizon of visibility. Enjoy the view while you can." Beginning at the beginning, Tyson and Goldsmith tackle the origin of the universe and its nature—from antimatter to dark matter and dark energy to the possibility of multiverses; how the universe became organized; the origin of stars; a fascinating look at the periodic table; the origin of planets, including a vivid discuss of planets outside our solar system; and the origin of life. Much of this material will necessarily be familiar to regular readers of popular science, but even they will benefit from Tyson and Goldsmith's incorporation of the latest cosmological developments, from string theory to recent thinking on dark energy; and if this book breaks out, as it has real potential to do, general readers of every stripe will benefit from the authors' sophisticated, deeply knowledgeable presentation. Since Carl Sagan's book-and-television package Cosmos (1980), astrophysicists have discovered that the universe will probably expand for eternity and have found planets orbiting neighboring stars. That's reason enough to update and redo the Sagan concept. Tyson and Goldsmith's book is allied with their four-hour PBS Nova special, which will air September 28 and 29. This book's popularity is thus ensured and, in effect, introduces the vibrant general-interest literature about individual post-Sagan advances in astronomy and cosmology, which includes Goldsmith's Worlds Unnumbered (1997). The authors adopt a colloquial, even conversational style suited to readers new to the ideas and vocabulary of big-bang cosmology; they make comprehensible the connections between subatomic physics and the structure of the universe. With that as background, the authors then flit between the epoch of infinite density and temperature and the contemporary eon of galaxies, and they sign off with ruminations on extraterrestrial life, though they look askance at UFO devotees. Invaluable and exhaustive

A very good book. I know those who think evolution and astrophysics is nonsense will not like a book like this, but I think most Amazon buyers are well enough educated to understand the difference between religious myth and science. Tyson explains the science (I am a geologist) in a way that is readily understandable and easy to follow. Astrophysics is a tough subject, but he explains it well.

Another great book from America's most intelligent man alive. Neil is hands down the guy America needs today. I wished Neil would get into politics and run for President. We need to have intellectuals and scientists as our role models and heroes. Neil is number one on my list. Read his books, listen to his radio show, watch his TV series and enjoy the depth of his genius mind.

An introduction to cosmology

I made the mistake of not inspecting the publish date of this book before purchase. That date is 2004, and since then a large number of discoveries have been made that make this book mildly "outdated" in some chapters.

Nonetheless, I enjoyed what I read. Neil DeGrasse Tyson has a great way of speaking of cosmology and astronomy in a way that is easily digestible. Topics that traditionally would overwhelm the average reader are made clear and understandable throughout the book, making this a great beginner to intermediate read for anyone interested in the discussed topics.

I did find a few grammatical errors, and the book does jump around a lot in a way that sometimes feels abrasive. But overall, it's a solid book.

These flash cards include no verbs, so “slice” means a slice as in bread or cake and “dry” may describe wine or food. Sometimes I grouped words that need context, like “butcher shop” and “cut of meat.” But most of the flashcards are grouped loosely to keep you from guessing meanings based on context rather than memorizing.

Remember when using words which originated in English that Israelis don’t think they are pronouncing English words funny, they think you are pronouncing Hebrew words wrong. If you don’t know the Hebrew for a food item, try saying it in English with an exaggerated Russian accent and it may turn out to be understandable.

I usually give the singular form of the noun. But there are exceptions for words like “lentils” (who would ask for a single lentil) and “pickles”, which are sliced into little bits at Israeli food stands. I left out some Israeli and ethnic items that would have required ingredient lists to explain, like shakshuka, schug, tahini, krembo, and even falafel, which sound the same in English.

Veronica Zysk has been working in the field of autism since 1991. More for Autism, not so much for Aspergers

I did not get much out of this for my two high IQ Auties. It really focuses on the more severe symptoms of lower-functioning autism. But it is SOOOOOO good... Too bad I can't use much of it. I wish folks wouldn't lump these diagnoses together. So different. Different needs and symptoms. Still, this would be an INCREDIBLE resource for autistic kids.

Hands down, the VERY best ASD resource book I've come across. Gives tons of practical, doable, doesn't-take-a-genius-to-figure-out solutions that instantly improve the lives of your child/student with an ASD. I wish someone would have given me this book at the very beginning of our family's journey.

One of the reasons I liked this book was that we received mixed input from friends and family regarding our son's diagnosis, especially since he was 4.5. This book indicated many examples of habits and behaviors that gave my husband and I 'ah-ha!' moments and it helped us feel less powerless to help our son. we knew that traditional ways of dealing with certain things did not work with our son and this book helped point out things that did.

Fantastic and loaded with Info!

Another stellar book by Jean Pierre Barral. This book is very informative and jammed pack with info and techniques with illustrations, assessments and treatments. It is very well organized. What a pleasure that is not general info and "dummied down" for the untrained therapist. If you know your anatomy or are willing to learn it this book is an excellent resource for highly trained massage therapists who do or want to do truly therapeutic work with great results! I also recommend the nerve mobilization tech's DVD's by Alexander. They complement this book nicely. If you do "fluff and buff" massage this is not for you!

Awesome resource for Roling� Structural Integration and related therapies

This is a compact, very user friendly guide for working with sore, inflamed nerves. I and many other Rolfers now use this seminal work as a reference. Considering its value to my work, it was very inexpensive, too. This book is highly recommended for any Rolfer or manual therapist.

Stellar and here's why...

This book will help you locate the most superficial positions of all the main nerves. This can be useful for applying many different modalities such as electrical stim, laser and manual therapy. It provides a nice systematic way to organize the body and get you thinking about the neurology instead of just the muscles. Really it is all about the neurology. Now when a patient presents with back pain I ask myself is it lumbar or sacral plexus and then work from there I do not think which muscles are involved which I did before I read the book. So it has been useful. Also I do a lot of laser and I use the references to locate the best places to affect the nerves for best response. I also recommend the cranial book Barral wrote. -S
