Amazon.com: Speaking of Tolstoy, I bet a lot of people are going to quoting the first line of Anna Karenina to you: "Happy families are all alike. Every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." Is there a consistency between what makes a family happy, the way that this family turns out to be?

Brooks: You know, I never bought Tolstoy's line.

Brooks: I didn't know many happy families that were alike. One of the things you learn is that we're all so much more complex. We all contain multitudes, so someone who might be a bully in one circumstance is incredibly compassionate in other circumstances. We have multiple selves, and the idea that we can have a very simple view of who we are, what our character is, that's actually not right.

One of the things all this research shows you is how humble you have to be in the face of the complexity of human nature. We've got a 100 billion neurons in the brain, and it's just phenomenally complicated. You take a little child who says, "I'm a tiger," and pretends to be a tiger. Well that act of imagination--conflating this thing "I" with this thing "tiger"--is phenomenally complicated. No computer could ever do that, but it's happening below the level of awareness. It seems so easy to us. And so one of the things these people learn is they contain these hidden strengths, but at the same time they have to be consciously aware of how modest they can be in understanding themselves and proceed on that basis.

© Josh Haner, The New York Times Several years ago I did some reporting on why so many kids drop out of high school, despite all rational incentives. That took me quickly to studies of early childhood and research on brain formation. Once I started poking around that realm, I found that people who study the mind are giving us an entirely new perspective on who we are and what it takes to flourish.

We’re used to a certain story of success, one that emphasizes getting good grades, getting the right job skills and making the right decisions. But these scientists were peering into the innermost mind and shedding light on the process one level down, in the realm of emotions, intuitions, perceptions, genetic dispositions and unconscious longings.

I’ve spent several years with their work now, and it’s changed my perspective on everything. In this book, I try to take their various findings and weave them together into one story.

This is not a science book. I don’t answer how the brain does things. I try to answer what it all means. I try to explain how these findings about the deepest recesses of our minds should change the way we see ourselves, raise our kids, conduct business, teach, manage our relationships and practice politics. This story is based on scientific research, but it is really about emotion, character, virtue and love. We’re not rational animals, or laboring animals; we’re social animals. We emerge out of relationships and live to bond with each other and connect to larger ideas.

Essentially a satirical novel interleaved with disquisitions on mirror neurons and behavioral economics, the narrative chronicles the life cycle of a fictional couple—Harold, a historian working at a think tank, and Erica, a Chinese-Chicana cable-TV executive—as a case study of the nonrational roots of social behaviors, from mating and shopping to voting. I love it. Brooks is a voice of reason in a maddening world, especially among conservatives in America. This text is a wonderful insight on how we tick and why we do what we do, presented in a story of individuals as they go through their lives and interact with a complicated world.

David Brooks never disappoints--his intelligence is a joy to try to follow in all his writings. This book takes a unique view of the development of human nature by telling the fictional life stories of a family; how the parents meet and the physiological and psychological instincts rule their reactions to each other; the birth and cognitive development of their child; how the human mind evolves and the different paths it can take, depending on the nuture/nature it abides in. Overall, a fascinating way to approach the complexities of human development in our current society.

This book was suggested to me by a coworker . I found it very insightful in how we grow and develop and change as well as interact with the world around us. It was also quick a read not bogged down with jargon. Brooks did a phenomenal job consolidating study after study after study so that anyone could understand them.

The best book I've read on how to get referrals from existing customers. I run a digital marketing agency and after reading this I bought a copy for each of my account managers and we've seen them bringing a lot more value to clients and to my agency as a result.

Recipe for Marketing Success

There's nothing totally unique about any one idea in "The Referral Engine." There's nothing unique about a 5lb. bag of sugar either. Of course that bag of sugar could be in the hands of a skilled pastry chef - or it could be in mine. I can tell you there's a pretty big difference. John Jantsch is the Head Chef of Marketing. He has an almost magical way of accumulating massive quantities of more basic ideas, sifting them, combining them in perfect proportions, and then turning them into recipes for delicious success. The end result almost defies identification of those original ingredients. A great chef understands every tool, and exactly what his oven will do at each temperature. John Jantsch understands small business owners to the extent he crawls right inside our heads to tweak attitudes - and he does it by slowly building a case logically, step by step, until you can't help but agree with what has just become so obvious.

In "Referral Engine" one of the first things he tackles is a business owner's reluctance to ask for referrals. I know that until I was exposed to Jantsch's material, I hated it! I expected my clients to love me and spread the love without me asking - and in fact, often times that did happen. No matter how good you think you are now, if you're like me, you have no idea how great your untapped potential in this area is.
I think the thing I like most about Referral Engine, and Jantsch's work in general, is that there is no dishonesty, no gimmicks, no use of trickery. I've always believed the path to success lies in creating a great product or service for which one charges a fair price. It's an approach built on creating a great product or service to begin with. Jantsch shares that approach. For example, Chapter 5 is titled "Your Authentic Strategy." The underlying premise of this work is the need to create a company worth referring. The second key idea is that you get ahead by helping others first. We're encouraged to partner with other businesses, and to always be looking for ways to help others, to connect, to refer. There are no one-way streets in Jantsch world. You clearly give as well as get. The icing on this cupcake is the multitude of examples and references that help one understand just what all of this means and how it's done.

Then, once the underlying foundation is in place, Jantsch starts with the mechanics, and, unlike other "idea" based authors - many of whom I also love - Jantsch gets into the guts of the issue. Here's how. Here's where you go. Do this next. There's no sugar coating. This stage isn't about the tasty result. This is about the process. Jantsch doesn't just cover the need to blog, he starts at the basement. For example, from P. 131, "Keyword rich" covers the way you need to use keywords in your blog in order to make it accessible. Sure, you might want to buy another book just on SEO, but in this one section, Jantsch manages to succinctly distill the basics that you will need - including providing tools like [...] which will help you.

If you take all of this book to heart, and implement it fully, not only will you have a great referral machine, you'll have a great business. This one book may not have all the information you'll need to improve all of the other parts of your business, but it will help you identify parts that aren't working because they will keep you from being talk, or referral, worthy. This book, assuming one has an Amazon Prime membership - and every small business owner should - is $11.69 today, its release date. I'd be surprised if your return on investment wasn't at least 1,000 times that. On the other hand, you could order 20 to 30 other books to cover the various aspects covered here - and I would hope for that, you'd have greater results, but somehow I seriously doubt it.

About the Author
BOB BOND, acknowledged throughout the world as an authority on the teaching of sailing, was training manager to the Royal Yachting Association, and is the author of The R.Y.A. Sailing Manual. He died in March 2010 at the age of seventy-three.

BILL ROBINSON, one of America’s foremost sailors and writers on sailing, was editor of Yachting magazine from 1967 to 1978. Upon leaving Yachting, he joined Cruising World as editor-at-large. He died in April 2007 at the age of eighty-eight.

It's my go-to book

I bought the hardbound first edition of this book in the early '80s. It immediately became my go-to book. When I lost it in a fire, it was the first book in my marine library that I replaced.

I'm pleased that this softbound second edition has the same high-quality illustrations and explanations as the first. In addition, it was updated to be current with the technology and techniques of the 90s (its current copyright).

I was tempted to give it only five stars because it could use another update to 2016. But, I decided that not much has changed since the early 90s (other than that catamarans have taken over the America's Cup and there has been a revolution in sailboat design). However, as that revolution is currently limited, for the most part, to multi-million dollar boats, for the rest of us, beginners and competent alike, who sail more modest yachts, this book is precisely what we need. If I could take only one book with me on a cruise, this would be it.

Extremely comprehensive of almost all aspects of sailing (but it covers boat trailering very little.) For beginners (you can learn to sail with this) through advanced levels including spinnakers; it covers the range from small OD monohulls, cats, through cruising inboards; weather; navigation & lights; tides; first aid; knots; recovering from various emergencies; entering & leaving difficult moorings; rafting (including it's good manners to walk on the forward part of others' boats to preserve their privacy); anchoring, etc. Experts in any area will want greater detail on a topic but others will be grateful for the help that's here. The 1250 drawings and photos are outstanding for their clarity and illustrative value.

I took up sailing this summer, and found that, while no book can replace the physical experience on the boat, one needs an instruction manual to keep up with all the maneuvers and terminology that are thrown at you. The Handbook Of Sailing provides concise and very well organized information, with ample illustrations. It’s the perfect accompanying textbook for someone who’s still trying to learn the lefts and rights of boating.

This challenges the theory that sixteenth-century gypsies were migrants from India and/or early predecessors to the later Roma population, as proposed by nineteenth-century gypsiologists. The book argues that the fluid identity of gypsies, whose origins and ethnicity were (and still are) ambiguous, allowed for the group to become a prime candidate for the 'other', thus a useful tool for reinforcing the parameters of orthodox social behaviour.

About the Author

Frances Timbers holds a PhD in British History from the University of Toronto (2008). She has published two books and three articles that deal with issues of magic, witchcraft and gender in sixteenth- and seventeenth-century England. Timbers is currently on a self-imposed sabbatical in Panama, where she spends her time writing about gypsies, teaching yoga, biking to the beach and caring for seven rescued cats.

I am a registered nurse and bought this book for a friend in nursing school. This book had some helpful tips, but there were some spelling errors and I found one mistake in information so far. Makes me not trust the information. Found myself having to look up all the info to ensure accuracy before committing it to memory.

The Black Swan

My son recommended reading The Black Swan to me. I had no idea what it was about or I likely would not have read a "financial book". I am an artist and tend to avoid this type of reading.
Coincidentally, I had just had a negative experience with a financial adviser and found the timing for this book perfect. The Black Swan is an occurrence that has great impact and is unforeseen. It is often what determines the success or failure of the quality of your financial life. That pretty much describes anything in the area of finances that matter.
The book is interesting, but more importantly funny, and easy to read. It is not your typical "how to" financial book. Just the opposite, it is a why you should stay away from a financial adviser... book. I learned a great deal and really look at the world of finances and the world in general in a different and a more positive way. This is a great book and I highly recommend it.

Black Swans in "The Black Swan"

There are true pearls in this book. Umberto Eco's "Anti-Library," Yevgenia's story, Algazel's rejection of science, "scalable" jobs and the antechamber of hope (anyone working one of these jobs will relate strongly), are a few examples. The problem is that they are hard to find and come somewhat unexpectedly, i.e., they are black swans. I think the problem is that the author apparently set out to write some kind of "treatise" and felt that the book had to be a weighty 500-page tome, so he had to include a lot of filler. Properly edited, this could have been a delightful 200-page read. Sometimes the author is wrong: for example, he dismisses linear phenomena too casually. It is obvious that nothing is nature is linear, since this would require the response to increase or decrease without bound as the independent variable increases or decreases, which is an impossibility. This is called the "Law of Diminishing Returns." The point is that many or even most phenomena behave linearly over a limited interval of interest. For example, a transistor is a linear device if biased (by means of proper voltage application) to its amplifying region, otherwise it behaves as a switch (as in digital devices). The author is prone sometimes to self-aggrandizing, but this is tempered with dashes of self-deprecating humor, making the reading tolerable. All in all, it's recommended. [This review is based on a reading of the first seven chapters; it will be updated as the reading proceeds.]

A Glorious Romp through epistemology

How do we know what we know? and Why do we think we know what we think we know? If I were still young and beautiful I would throw myself at this man's feet. A glorious romp through philosophy an depistemology, masquerading as a book about finance. I'm sure many other reviews have noted how prescient this book was, coming out just before that horrendous Black Swan, the housing meltdown of 2008. A great book to read along with reading and watching "The Big Short." The guy is hilarious and sophisticated. It's one of the few books I've read in adult like that forced me to keep consulting a dictionary-- and dynamic and fascinating enough to make me return to the text after doing so. One of my best books of the last couple of years.

A nice edition to the tradition of psalmic magic

The Book of Gold is truly a golden edition to the library of any magicians with an interest in Psalmic Magic or the Grimoire Traditions. This work is expertly translated and the commentary and appendices alone make it worth the price. Finally a work that catalogs the use of the Psalms throughout various manuscripts of the grimoire tradition in an easy to reference way!

This book will make a great supplement to the practices of a wide variety of magicians from ceremonialists to folk magicians. If you use the Psalms in your work, first you need to get a copy of Sepher Shimmush Tehillim (Magical Use of the Psalms), which is usually included in the The Sixth and Seventh Books of Moses, then you need to buy this book!

So why only three stars then? Because there are two problems with the book that I received. Firstly, and more likely to effect the average reader is the fact that many of the directions for working with the psalms will instruct you to read or write the Psalm out until a certain line of the Psalm.

For example for Psalm 12 it says "If you have fallen asleep in a desert, read this Psalm until 'ne quando dicat'".

Okay, so beyond the question of how someone who is sleeping is meant to read a psalm, basically they are giving you the line in the Psalm (in Latin)where you are meant to stop reading. This is excellent for those who have a working knowledge of Latin or an interlinear Bible at their fingertips and want to spend time cross referencing. However, for those who would like to use the psalms in English, this adds an annoying extra step of research to the process of doing the actual work. I'm all for doing research when it is called for, but I am assuming that David and Paul translated and edited this manuscript so that people could actually use it. Which begs the question, if you want to make it easily usable, which much the rest of it is, why not just translate the line into English as you have the rest of the manuscript? Or at least give the English translation in the commentary following the Psalm. Is that so much to ask?

The regularity with which translators and editors of various Grimoire manuscripts choose to include the Latin wording and conjurations without offering a translation has a tendency to quickly become annoying. Sorry, but we aren't all proficient in Latin and I really would appreciate avoiding the extra step of translating the parts that you have chosen not to illuminate us on. I'm not saying that the Latin should be omitted. I mean, hey, who doesn't love that oh so magical dead language? But at least include translations in the commentary. I'm not speaking just specifically of this author (who does this with some regularity) or this work, but in general. However, this work stands as an example of this type of an approach, which can be somewhat inconvenient at best or make the translator come across as linguistically elitist at worst.

My second issue with my copy of the work is that I have just received it and nearly every third page is either completely or partially unglued. I mean, pages are literally falling out of the book. I know that this isn't the fault of the author or publisher, but the printer. However, the physical quality of the book does play upon my review as well. I plan to exchange it an hope that the poor binding is a fluke. I have purchased other works from Avalonia in the past and not had this problem, so it is most likely a simple error.

That all said, I most certainly enjoy this work and give kudos to David Rankine and Paul Harry Barron for putting it together and translating (most of) it. I would recommend it to friends and students in the future. I'll just make sure to recommend that they procure an interlinear Douay-Rheims Bible while they're at it.

Wonderful addition to my library!

I found this book after reading a blog by one of the authors. It intrigued me, as I come from a Christian background, but have turned my back on it completely, whilst retaining an interest in the Bible and history of the tradition. To find a book like this filled with spells and charms which uses the Psalms from the Bible, from the 17th century and translated into excellent modern English was a wonderful gift. I have tried some of the spells myself now, with good results and will continue to experiment. A rare keeper for my shelves!

I recommend this to people interested in magic, regardless of the religious tradition you follow. Its great to find material like this which is historic, without all the airs and graces usually associated with these types of books. No nonsense, which is what I like about the authors.

Giving it 5 stars with no hesitation. The Latin noted by another reviewer was not an issue, even though I am not a big grimoire adherent, I could understand it and find that using the latin, which would have been Latin in the original copy, had better effects than using the equivalent in English. A simple online translator might help if you never did basic latin at school.
