This text compiles the (American) Annual High School Mathematics Examinations (AHSME), now called the American Mathematics Competition, that were administered from 1961-1965. It includes the questions, their answers, their solutions, and a listing of the problems classified by subject. This book is briefer than the others in this series. That may be because 1966 was the year in which a penalty was introduced for wrong answers in order to discourage random guessing.

Each examination consists of forty multiple choice problems based on the American high school curriculum at the time. The problems are meant to be done without a calculator. The principal topics are algebra and geometry, although there are questions on set theory and logic. The examination consists of three parts, which are successively more difficult. The first part, consisting of twenty questions, contains short problems that are meant to test for conceptual understanding. The next two parts each contain ten problems. These problems are designed to make you think more deeply about the subject matter. The problems range in difficulty from routine problems to ones that require considerable ingenuity to solve.

The format of the book enables you to work through the problems, check your answers, and correct any mistakes you make before examining the solutions that Salkind provides. Reading his solutions is instructive for a couple reasons. Salkind's solutions tend to be elegant, and he sometimes presents alternate methods of solving a problem. That said, if you are not familiar with the results that Salkind assumes, you may find his solutions cryptic.

Working through this text will help you develop your problem solving skills. If you are preparing for the American Mathematics Competition, you may want to use this as a source of practice problems. However, keep in mind that both the format of the examination and the curriculum have changed since these examinations were administered. There are problems dealing with non-decimal bases and logic which will be unfamiliar to current high school students.

Update (23 March 2009): To prepare for the current format of the AMC, you should work through The Contest Problem: Book VIII (MAA Problem Book Series) in order to prepare for the AMC 10 or The Contest Problem Book IX (Maa Problem Books) (Bk. 9) to prepare for the AMC 12. Top scorers on those examinations qualify for the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME). Of the volumes in this series, only The Contest Problem Book V: American High School Mathematics Examinations (AHSME) / American Invitational Mathematics Examinations (AIME) 1983-1988 (Anneli Lax New Mathematical Library) contains problems from the AIME.

smart reference book, easy to read

After using Shigley & Mischkes' "Mechanical Engineering Design" for years, a colleague of mine loaned me this book. In comparison to "Mechanical Engineering Design," Deutschman, Michels, and Wilsons' "Machine Design, Theory and Practice" is a much easier (and quicker) read. I only wish my professors in school had chosen this textbook instead of the 'Shigley' title. Information in "Machine Design" goes into great detail for given, specific applications. An example of this would be shown in the text's explanation of Stub Acme & Buttress Threads (used extensively in my industry). Good luck finding finding information of this detail in Shigley's book.

This brilliantly researched book views human physiology in a completely different light from that hitherto known, and is highly recommended to be read by those belonging to the medical profession, and even the lay person.

In this original research, Professor Tony Nader has sought to discover the true purpose of the form and function of the human physiology, and its relation to cosmology. It is interesting to note that he has studied and compared every aspect of human physiology, at all its stages—the DNA, cell, embryo, up to the adult human physiology, and found that at every level, there is a precise one-to-one correspondence between the structure and functions of human physiology and the 40 aspects of the Veda and the Vedic Literature, which are the fundamental structures of Natural Law, as brought to light by Maharishi in his Vedic Science.

After a thorough discussion of the nature of consciousness as the basis of matter and the process by which it interacts with itself to produce the mind and body, Professor Nader discusses each of the 40 areas of the Veda and Vedic Literature with respect to the 40 fundamental aspects of human physiology. The human physiology (including the DNA at its core) has the same structures and functions as the holistic, self-sufficient, self-referral reality expressed in Rk. About the Author
Professor Nader received his MD degree from the American University of Beirut, where he also studied internal medicine and psychiatry.

His PhD is in the area of Brain and Cognitive Science from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he was also a visiting physician at the Clinical Research Center. He completed his post-doctoral work as a Clinical and Research Fellow in Neurology at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School.

Professor Nader has conducted research on neurochemistry, neuroendocrinology, and the relationship between diet, age, behavior, mood, seasonal influences, and neurotransmitter and hormonal activity, and on the role of neurotransmitter precursors in medicine.

His interest in natural health care led him, while at MIT, to conduct research on Maharishi Ayur-Veda herbal and mineral preparations for their safety, their effects on memory and behavior, and their ability to prevent aging and disease, including cancer.

He also conducted original research on the effects of Maharishi's Transcendental Meditation and TM-Sidhi Program in solving social and international problems.

Professor Nader's desire to gain total understanding of the human mind and body-of consciousness and physiology-led him to the study of Maharishi's Vedic Science and Technology under the guidance of His Holiness Maharishi Mahesh Yogi.

He has organized courses and lectured widely on Maharishi Ayur-Ved, the ancient system of perfect health, in more than 50 countries, and held positions as a professor and director of Maharishi's Vedic Approach to Health Programs.

He is currently International President of Maharishi Open Universities; International President of Maharishi's World Parliament or World Peace; Director of the Council of Supreme Intelligence of Maharishi's Global Administration through Natural Law; International President of Maharishi Ayru-Veda Universities; president of Maharishi University of Management, Holland; and President of Maharishi European University of Management, Brussels.

Professor Nader was honored by Maharishi as Custodian of the Constitution of the Universe in 1997. He was also given the title Chakravarti by Maharishi on the day of Guru Purnima, 1997.

On the basis of his knowledge of physiology, Dr. Nader has successfully correlated each aspect of the Vedic Literature to a specific area of physiology, with the conclusion that human physiology is the expression of Veda and the Vedic Literature. This is the subject matter of this book.

In honor of his discovery, Professor Nader received his weight in gold at a historic celebration in February 1998, at Maharishi Vedic University in Vlodrop, Holland, in the presence of Maharishi.

This discovery has been appreciated by scientists and political leaders throughout the world, including the Presidents of India, Mozambique, Lebanon, Turkey, Trinidad and Tobago, and the Maronite Patriarch of Antioch and of all the Middle East.

From 12 October to 16 October, 2000, during a five-day coronation ceremony (Rajyabhishek), Professor Tony Nader, was crowned the First Sovereign Ruler of the Global Country of World Peace, with its authority in the invincible organizing power of Natural Law, which naturally and eternally governs the evolution of all life everywhere.

On 17 October, Professor Nader, honoured with the title Nader Raam, in keeping with the tradition of the Royal Rulership of Raam-- the rule of Natural Law--graciously accepted his new sovereign role and announced the forty Ministries of His Global Country of World Peace, each upheld by the total Constitution of the Universe- forty values of the Vedic Literature--and yet also especially highlighted by one of the forty.

amazing book, profound and wonderful

This book is phenomenal. The Veda ('knowledge' in Sanskrit) and Vedic literature is convincingly demonstrated to be the structure of the human physiology, thus making this book relevant to every human being. Very interesting is the correlation with the Unified Field of modern physics (thank you Einstein) mathematically: one becomes three, which becomes eight, becomes 24, then 96, then 192. This is why there are 192 ascending and descending tracts of our central nervous system, for example. This correlation of form and function continues for all 40 aspects of the Vedic literature. It's a new paradigm for medical science.
Also impressive is the correlation with Vedic 'gods' which are shown to actually be the different types of intelligence within our physiology. For instance, Ganesh, the 'elephant god' and remover of obstacles, comprises the pons, medulla and cerebellum. In their function, they exactly represent the same functions ascribed to Ganesh. Together these structures also look exactly like Ganesh. (seen in figures 134-139)
New effective treatments have already been derived and clinically tested from this knowledge, including primordial sound therapy, light therapy, Vedic vibration therapies, etc.
The human physiology (including DNA at its core) has the same structure and function as the holistic, self-sufficient reality expressed in Rk Veda. This renders the study of physiology as the supreme philosophy of life, establishing individual consciousness and national consciousness on the level of Cosmic Life. In honor of his discovery, Dr Nader was awarded his weight in gold at Maharishi Vedic University in Vlodrop, Holland, February 1998.
I highly recommend this book, especially if you are considering a career in medicine or physiological studies.

A great guide to reaching the next level in your Jira implementation

Mastering Jira is an excellent guide to reaching the “next level” in understanding Jira to meet the needs of your organization. The book provides a comprehensive overview of virtually all the areas you need to cover to build your Jira instance maintain it. Some of the areas of interest I found immediately was the importation of CSV files into Jira using Javascript to show and hide fields based, and the use of built-in Notifications to make useful communication at any stage of a workflow in the issue lifecycle.

Achieving a balance in any given book is difficult. If there is too little coverage on a topic, the book does not have enough material to “master” the topic, if there is too much coverage on one single topic, the title is out of reach for someone getting starting and attempting to learn the application. I found that Mastering Jira I found was adept in achieving a balanced approach.

The only area that was covered in perhaps too much depth early was the Jira SDK discussion. Granted a further discussion of this is found at the end of the book, but a user covering the many topics Jira touches (Agile, JQL, Workflows, etc.) will probably have enough to learn and likely will not want to begin building their own plugins right away. On the other hand, a discussion about the Jira installation would not be complete without addressing the issue of development.

Why this book? You can find a lot of information on the web with regard to Jira. The real beauty of this text is all of the essentials are here in one location. As far as some unique aspects to the book, I found the use of graphs and screen shots to illustrate various topics was outstanding. The author also covers (though almost never discussed on the web) how to document your Jira instance and even conduct a business needs (Requirements) analysis that will make your Jira project match up what the user(s) requested. Lastly, the author provides wide variety of ways to create reports and suggests several use cases to assist the user in modelling and integrating Jira into a business environment.

You’ll find once you have completed the book you will be returning to it often as a resource as your implementation grows.

JIRA is an excellent tool, but to use it effectively one needs to see it through the eyes of experienced administrators who manage JIRA in complex corporate environments. Mastering JIRA introduces a reader to a strategy of using JIRA and to best practices. There are many ways to use JIRA, interact with it and improve it, but the most difficult part of any way is to know that there’s a way and to make the first step, and this book allows reader to make a lot of first steps in a ways that uncover real power of JIRA. Apart from covering most essential plugins as Agile and Script Runner it also shows some tricks employed by administrators and designers. Mastering JIRA will make you thinking JIRA and understand JIRA culture.

Repetitive, redundant, and tends to repeat itself

I enjoyed the five books in the original Blending series, and so I looked forward to their continuation. And while I did keep turning the pages on this one, I found the dialog incredibly irritating.
Almost the entire story is told via conversation. And the dialog is so mannered, awkward and formal - even when it is mere agreement. For example:
"Let's also say that your violence would have mine to keep it company."
This book could've been one third its final length if she'd written "Agreed." once in a while. But instead she has one member of the Blending state an idea, then has a short paragraph for _every_ other member to make a statement agreeing with it. She does this with other conversations as well, but mercifully, those tend to have fewer people in the room.
The obsession with tea and (for the women) bathing also gets old.
All of the bad guys are pretty much the same character divided into different bodies, which can make them a bit hard to keep track of. However, it is still entertaining to watch their downfall.
The world Ms. Green has built here is really interesting, but this particular novel doesn't really do it justice. Still, it is readable, and Book Two in the Blending Enthroned series is a bit better, so it may be worth reading this one. However, my best recommendation is to stop with Book 5 of the original Blending series.

Mediocrity at its finest

This book starts out where the last series left off, with good plot ideas but put together in a horrible fashion. The books in this series are page turners some say, and they are, but the only reason being what could be said in one book alone, is chopped into pieces and printed as seperate 'books'. You have to buy the next book in the series just to see what should have happenned in the one before.
All that aside, the characters are easily liked. Six main characters covering almost every personality type you could think of; you're bound to find one you can identify with. Too bad they all any sort of depth. The overall direction of the story is good, but it breaks down in alot of areas. For one, the author can't seem to break her ties from romance writing; everyone has to sleep with everyone else to maintain their magical 'strength'. Secondly, our main characters are infallible when it comes to their actions outside of their group; they're always right, and the 'other' protagonists or antagonists are always wrong.
Overall, I'm sure when all the books are written, and you read them all as if they were one book, it will be a good story. But if you don't mind choking down a mediocre book until that point, grab this and read it.

New Blending Book

I enjoyed this book but one thing that annoyed me was the fact that it introduced a lot of new characters, some of which seemed to have no relevance to the story. Hopefully now that Ms. Green is finished with the introductions the next book will move much faster and tie all the story lines together. One note for new readers: if you haven't read the the blending series before this do so, because you will be completly lost without it. Besides that the book got really interesting at the end, complete with a traditional cliff hanger ending. I can't wait for the next one!
